Donnelly Corner Business Park Proposal Area

Recently, over the past winter, a service station and restaurant known locally as the “Donnelly Corner” ESSO closed its doors after decades in business. “Donnelly Corner” has been an important central meeting place not only to people involved in the trucking business but also community residents from throughout the area. From an economic perspective, “Donnelly Corner” was vital to the four surrounding communities and municipality as it provided a central reloading area for business pick-ups and deliveries. The communities of the Smoky River Region would like to see a revitalization of the property so that it again can achieve its status as one of the main gathering places in the Peace Region of Alberta. In 2005, Imperial Oil, owners of the 10 acre site adjacent to the junction of Hwy 2 and 49, demolished the existing ESSO gas station due to the poor state of repair. Currently, Smoky River Regional Economic Development is formulation a plan for the revitalization of “Donnelly Corner” including the development of the adjacent 130 acres into a light industrial commercial business park. Economic Development is working cooperatively with Imperial Oil and the adjacent land owner in developing an area structure plan for future development of the site. It is the intent of Smoky River Regional Economic Development that once the planning is finalized that a developer is hired to develop the 140 acres into serviced lots readied for sale to interested parties.
